20-03-17 On Thursday 09th March, after taking part in an after-school club, children from Year 2 performed in front of a large audience at the Celebration of Dance Festival 2017. Their dance was inspired by 'The Jungle Book' and was choreographed by Abbie Smith, who gave up so much of her time to ensure the children were ready for the big day! 21-06-16 On Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st June, we were lucky enough to welcome Premier Sports in to deliver some workshops based upon their 'Road to Rio' programme. All children took part in a session based around a Paralympic Sport; Reception and Year 1 enjoyed Boccia whilst Y2 enjoyed Goalball. Both activities were enjoyed by both staff and children and supported National School Sport Week extremely well.
08-03-16 After taking part in an after-school club for 6 weeks and squeezing in extra rehearsals at lunchtime, 22 children from Y2 performed in front of a large audience at the Celebration of Dance event held by Derby SSP at the Riverside Centre. Their dance based on 'Superheroes' was choreographed by Abbie Smith, who gave up so much of her time to ensure the children were ready for the big day! The children certainly delivered and showed immense bravery and confidence when performing and were without doubt, a HUGE credit to Ridgeway! Well done Ridgeway All Stars . . . you were incredible and we are all so very proud of you!
10-02-16 Miss James and Class 6 spent the morning at a FUNdamentals Festival at the University of Derby that was delivered by Derby SSP. As part of the fun packed morning, children had the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, including; football, yoga bugs, sitting volleyball and gymnastics along with time to try out some new bikes. Children came back into school buzzing but eagerly wanting their well deserved lunch!!
09/10-02-16 To support our MADD Week, and by using the Sports Premium funding, we were lucky enough to welcome Ashley to Ridgeway from West End in Schools who delivered a high quality workshop based on 'Dances through the Years' to each class. It was, without doubt, a great and memorable experience, for both staff and children! Ashley left us with a little message:
'A massive thanks to Ridgeway - it's been a pleasure bringing West End to this school. The staff have been so friendly, welcoming and giving in the workshops with their energy and focus. This really shows up in the students attitudes and willingness to learn and so new things. Children with such energy and who are as dynamic as they are here, are a joy to work with!'
21-01-16 We are pleased to announce that our preparations for the Celebration of Dance 2016 are well underway. 24 children have been chosen from Y2 to represent Ridgeway at the prestigious event on Tuesday 8th March where they will be performing to a large audience in what is sure to be an experience they will remember for many years to come! If you child is taking part, don't forget to book your tickets to come along and watch - it would great to see you there! Please see Miss Harford for more details.
05-01-16 In recent months, it has been widely reported from campaign group UK Active that the UK faces a ‘ticking time bomb’ of health problems due to a lack of exercise. It has also been reported that half of seven year olds in England are only active for an hour a day. This is extremely concerning but as we, Ridgeway Infant School, place huge importance on physical activity through PE and at playtimes/lunchtimes, we want to make a difference . . . .
In partnership with Premier Sports, we are currently running a new fitness style club called ‘Ready, Steady, Go’ on a Tuesday afternoon from 2.45pm – 3.20pm. Twelve children from across KS1 have been chosen to take part and are taking part in weekly, creative and engaging activities that really get the heart working hard in order to improve their stamina. All PE lessons are currently starting with a 3 minute continuous run so that all children are encouraged to sustain physical activity for a period of time.

10-06-15 From everyone at Ridgeway, we would like to say a HUGE thank you for helping The Ridgeway Games 2015 prove to be a resounding success! Although apprehensive at first due to the dramatic change in structure from previous years, the day itself undoubtedly put any fears to rest. It was clear to see that the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves as they wore huge smiles throughout and in fact, didn’t realise just how much physical activity they had done in one day! The day would certainly not have ran as smoothly as it did without the cooperation and support of all families who joined us on this memorable day! Above all, it was excellent to see so many of you join in with some of the fun races at the end (with great enthusiasm and competiveness!) as this will be something the children remember for many years to come . . . or maybe when the Ridgeway Staff beat the mum’s in the tug of war!
02-06-15 I would like to take this opportunity to say a HUGE thank you to all parents, carers and children for their effort in bringing in Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers this year. I am pleased to announce that this year, we managed to collect: 10,301 vouchers. We have decided to use these vouchers to positively transform the experience of our children during playtimes. By enhancing the quality of equipment available to our children during these times along with storing them in a more child-friendly way, we hope to encourage more children to be physically active with their friends.
12-03-15 A group of 23 Y2’s represented Ridgeway Infant School at the Celebration of Dance event held by Derby School Sport Partnership at the Riverside Centre. After weeks of preparation, hard work and dedication, the team showed immense bravery and confidence when performing in front of a large audience, which was attended by over 20 schools. The children were an absolute pleasure to work with over the past few weeks and most definitely made their grown-ups and every one at Ridgeway extremely proud! A HUGE thanks to Abbie Smith, a free-lance Dance specialist for choreographing our routine to ‘Uptown Funk’ and working with our children to make sure they were ready for their big performance! Another HUGE thank you to Derby SSP for another amazing event . . . we look forward to getting another team ready to perform again next year!
26-02-15 To support our MADD week, we were lucky enough to welcome Lorraine from a London based Dance organisation ‘West End in Schools’ to work with us and bring some stories to life through Dance. From previously working with the organisation in February 2014, we knew we were going to be in for a treat and we certainly were not disappointed! After watching Lorraine showcase her mesmerising dancing skills across many different styles in an introductory assembly, each class then had 40minutes to choreograph a dance to a chosen story alongside Lorraine’s guidance. Both Reception and Year 1 brought the story of ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ to life with Year 2 bringing Roald Dahl’s ‘The Enormous Crocodile’ to life! It was undoubtedly a memorable experience for both children and staff and we hope to welcome ‘West End in Schools’ back to Ridgeway in the future. On behalf of everyone at Ridgeway, I would like to say a HUGE thanks to Lorraine for helping us promote Dance within our hugely successful MADD week!
06-02-15 Miss C Coburn and Miss M Bailey are now fully recognised Swimming Instructors after taking part in the course in October 2014. We hope to continue and further improve our success with swimming by getting more Y2 children swimming lengths and achieving the end of KS2 expectation by the time they leave us!
26-01-15 We were very lucky to welcome in Abbie Smith, a Freelance Dance specialist who also works for Deda and Yoga Buds, to deliver a staff meeting to many members of staff after-school. The aim of the training was to promote the development of Dance across the school by upskilling teachers with invaluable tools and resources to use within their lessons. As an active session, it was great to see everyone get fully involved and we owe a big ‘Thank You’ to Abbie for a great booklet of ideas that will be extremely useful when planning future Dance units.
08-12-14 A large group of children [of different year groups] performed a spectacular dance in front of the whole school in a special assembly. The dance performed was choreographed by two coaches of Premier Sports that have worked with great enthusiasm and passion over the Autumn Term to teach the children over one lunchtime each week. It was clear to see how much the children enjoyed learning the dance but also performing even if there were a few nerves at first! We now hope to get more children involved to take part in the dance club at lunchtime so that we can hold another assembly in the Spring term to showcase more of our children enjoying physical activity! Many thanks to Premier Sports!
02-12-14 Nine children from Year 2 were selected to represent Ridgeway Infant School in a Multi-skills Festival at Derby Moor Community Sports College after school from 4pm -5pm where children from Arboretum Primary School also attended. As part of the event, children took part in nine different challenge activities including a vertical jump, shuttlecock ‘keepy-uppys’ on a badminton racket, target throw, speed bounce and skipping. The children thoroughly enjoyed the event and ended up with rosy cheeks by the end! A HUGE thanks must go to Murray Watson [PE Teacher at Derby Moor] and his team of Year 10 sports leaders for running the event along with the parents of the children in the ‘Ridgeway All Stars Team for their support and encouragement throughout the event! Another festival is planned for February/March next year of which we hope to send another team to take part in so watch this space for further details!
17-11-14 In order to further develop standards and teaching of PE at Ridgeway, we used part of our PE and Sport Premium money to book in a member from the Derby SSP team to deliver a KS1 Games Workshop as a staff meeting. As the new curriculum is heavily centered around FUNdamentals that include basic skills such as agility, balance and coordination, we felt this was an area we needed support with in order to develop subject knowledge across our staff team. As part of the workshop, we were introduced to a new resource pack that has been developed specifically in line with the new curriculum of which we will be receiving a copy of in the next few weeks. This will undoubtedly help with the planning, delivery and assessment of lessons which in turn will prove to be a major catalyst in driving standards forward in PE across the whole school. The workshop proved to be extremely successful as all staff who attended left feeling eager to try out new games that they had played within the session along with an improved level of confidence to teach PE! Further staff meetings to develop other areas of PE will hopefully be planned in for the Spring/Summer term.
06-10-14 Through our affiliation with the Derby School Sport Partnership, we were able to send two of our staff members, Mrs A Hodgekinson and Mrs Simpson, to attend a Mini Sports Leaders Award course, held at Chellaston Secondary School. From this course, both staff members were thoroughly enthused and up skilled with a bank of ideas to deliver fun, active and inclusive games during playtime and lunchtime.
